Project Overview
Hebron, CT – The RHAM Middle and High School indoor air quality (IAQ) verification project in Hebron, Connecticut, exemplifies a proactive approach to ensuring healthy learning environments through compliance with the state-mandated Public Act No. 23-167. SES, in collaboration with Trueflow Testing and Balancing, conducted a comprehensive IAQ evaluation of the 232,000-square-foot facility, which serves grades 7 through 12.
The scope of work focused on evaluating and improving ventilation and filtration systems across classrooms, administrative offices, gymnasiums, auditoriums, cafeterias, kitchens, and other educational spaces. SES’s efforts included assessing ventilation airflows, filtration efficiency, and system calibration to meet or exceed the standards set by Connecticut’s IAQ legislation.
Key findings from the assessment revealed that while the HVAC systems were generally well-maintained and equipped with MERV 13 filters, ventilation rates in certain zones fell below current code requirements. The facility contains forty-three (43) rooftop air handling units (AHUs) that serve a combination of multizone VAV boxes and single-zone spaces. While the equipment and building automation system were in relatively good condition, SES discovered that many AHUs were under-ventilating their respective spaces. The primary cause of under-ventilation was the reliance on aging airflow stations for outside air control. Most of these airflow stations, exceeding 10 years of service, had either failed or lost calibration over time. Through the IAQ study, SES recommended replacing the outdated airflow stations and rebalancing the system to align with ASHRAE Standard 62.1.
The project concluded with a detailed report summarizing the verification process, identifying deficiencies, and providing actionable recommendations. SES was able to assist the school district with implementing the recommendations and providing construction oversight and verification. SES’s expertise ensured that RHAM High School achieved its IAQ compliance goals, supporting a safer and healthier environment for students and staff.
The attention to detail from SES was very good, and their communication was on point and responsive. In their evaluation report, SES identified issues with our current systems and provided comprehensive solutions. They also supplied cost estimates to complete the repairs, allowing us to plan for a budget. The value of what the District received in SES’ report, comparing price to deliverable, was excellent.
