Project Overview
Groton, CT – The Mystic River Magnet School is a 75,000 sq. ft elementary school which educates approximately 525 students on a daily basis. This School focuses on STEM courses with a course emphasis on Active Exploration and Ingenuity.
SES was hired to perform water spray quality testing on eight selected areas; four specimens of installed curtain wall and four specimens of installed windows on the first, second and third floor of the school. SES was also hired to perform pull-off strength testing on several selected areas and an IR scan on the entirety of the roof. By testing envelope components early, and according to performance-based standards, many specific installation and component problems that would not be visually detected can be identified and corrected before they become systemic. The tests that were conducted were:
ASTM E 783 Standard Test Method for Field Measurement of Air Leakage Through Installed Exterior Windows and Doors
ASTM E 1105 Standard Test Method for Field Determination of Water Penetration of Installed Exterior Windows, Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls, by Uniform or Cyclic Static Air Pressure Difference
ASTM D4541 Standard Test Method for Pull-Off Strength of Coatings
Infrared Roof Scan
ASTM C1060 (Standard Practice for Thermographic Inspection of Insulation Installations in Envelope Cavities of Frame Buildings) ASTM C1153 (Standard Practice for Location of Wet Insulation in Roofing Systems Using Infrared Imaging)
