Project Overview
Northport, NY – Sustainable Engineering Solutions (SES) has been instrumental in optimizing energy efficiency and system performance at the Northport VA Medical Center in Northport, New York, through multiple commissioning projects. These efforts highlight SES’s expertise in ensuring reliable and energy-efficient operation in healthcare facilities. In 2017, SES provided commissioning services for the HVAC and control system retrofit project at the Northport VA Medical Center. The project included the commissioning of various energy conservation measures including a complete chilled water plant retrofit and newly installed air handling units. The intent of the project was to optimize building performance with a focus on energy savings and efficient operation.
Phase 2, completed in 2022, focused on renovations and upgrades to existing HVAC systems and building automation system controls. SES commissioned the newly installed AC-5 air handling unit (AHU) system serving the operating rooms, as well as new controllers and sequences for air handling systems in Building 200.
In 2024, SES commissioned the implementation of the Optimum Energy chiller plant optimization system at the Northport VA Chiller Plant. This advanced system leverages optimization software to monitor and adjust chiller plant operations, increasing efficiency by taking control during optimal periods. SES oversaw critical coordination tests between Optimum Energy and the building management system (BMS), including sequence and switch-over tests to verify transitions through normal operation, free cooling, and loss of communication scenarios.
