Standard Test Method for Pull-Off Strength of Coatings Using Portable Adhesion Testers

This test measures the pull-off strength of sheet and fluid applied coatings. The testing standard does not specify an acceptable test pressure, this is usually specified by the architect and must be agreed upon before beginning the test. Typically, test pressures range from 16 psi to 30 psi. There are two protocols specified in the standard. If neither is specified for the test, Protocol 1 is usually used.

Protocol 1 – Test to fracture: Test to fracture is used to determine a maximum load that can be achieved when a plug of material is detached with the selected test parameters. At least 3 tests must be done for Protocol 1

Protocol 2 – Pass/Fail testing: Pass/fail is used to verify the results of a testing procedure can meet a minimum load criterion.
