At Sustainable Engineering Solutions (SES), we’ve built our firm around a simple idea: when you take the time to understand the real “why” behind a project, everything else falls into place. That belief is embodied in what we call The SES Way — a structured yet flexible approach to every service we offer, built around three fundamental steps: Discover, Plan, and Execute.

This framework is less about workflow and more about mindset. It’s also about simplicity, and rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and clarity. And while the steps may seem simple at first glance, each one is intentionally deep and designed to bring order to complexity and ensure the best possible outcomes for our clients.

Discover

Every project begins with questions. But not just surface-level ones like “What’s the building for?” We want to know why the project exists. What are the long-term goals, the challenges, the sensitivities? Maybe it’s a school for students with special needs, where environmental conditions must be carefully managed. Or maybe it’s a facility with escalating energy costs and no clear explanation. Our job is to ask the right questions and get to the root of it. We push for understanding, not assumptions.

We’ve built a team that thrives on this kind of discovery. We look for people who are naturally curious — who want to tinker, research, dig into the unfamiliar, and figure out how things work. That mindset leads to better questions, and better questions lead to smarter plans. Our team comes from a wide range of backgrounds — not just traditional commissioning or design education — and that diversity of experience brings fresh perspectives and creative problem-solving to every project.

Plan

Once we’ve identified the project’s deeper needs, we build a tailored roadmap. This isn’t boilerplate language meant to augment checklists. We develop clear, deliberate strategies that align with the client’s goals, the design team’s direction, and the realities of construction.

Our focus is to understand the client’s pain points — both past and present — so we can prioritize the things that are truly meaningful to them. By digging deeper into what matters most, we give these priorities the weight they deserve in the planning process. This allows us to develop strategies that align with the client’s goals, helps us avoid repeating mistakes of the past, and reflects what success really looks like for them. We plan not just for deliverables, but for communication, accountability, and quality control — always with the client’s concerns at the center. When plans are this intentional and collaborative, the execution phase becomes that much more effective.

Execute

This is where SES really differentiates itself — in execution. We’re out in the field solving problems, touching equipment, and checking every detail. We take what we’ve discovered and planned and apply it with precision and purpose. Our job isn’t to assign blame when something goes wrong — it’s to find out why it happened and what needs to be done to fix it. That honesty, that willingness to get into the weeds, to act as a flashlight working the darkest corners of a room, to understand the nuance of a situation, is something contractors and design teams have come to value.

We work closely with every stakeholder, and we make it clear from the outset: we’re here to help. That means providing context when problems arise, offering solutions when there’s uncertainty, and sharing lessons from past projects when they’re relevant. Whether we’re resolving a coordination issue in the field or noticing a subtle but important detail in a manufacturer’s spec, our goal is to bring clarity and value at every step.

A Framework for Projects and People

The SES Way applies to everything we do. From commissioning to retro-commissioning, energy audits to building envelope testing — the process holds. Discover, plan, execute. It works on complex, multi-phase new construction just as well as it does on quick-turnaround troubleshooting jobs. It’s a framework designed to support both the project and the people working on it.

Ultimately, our process is about doing things the right way. It’s about being a trusted partner — the team that sees the things others miss, asks the questions others don’t, and stays with the client long after others have moved on. That’s what the SES Way means to us. And it’s why we do what we do.
